The Bowery est une avenue au sud-est de Manhattan, près du pont de Brooklyn. Ancienne artère convoitée de la ville, quartier huppé, Bowery est devenu le territoire des exclus du rêve américain : sans-abri, travailleurs précaires, drogués, prostituées, malades mentaux… Ray, un jeune homme nouvellement débarqué dans le quartier, est rapidement happé par le Bowery et par sa gangrène, partagée par tous ses habitants, l’alcoolisme...
